By Shendia Chan

In conjunction with the 48 th Merdeka Day anniversary celebration, Gerbang Perdana (GP) was honored to be invited by the Johor Tourism to participate in the float procession which was held on the 17 th August 2005 at Danga Bay, Johor Bahru.

On this auspicious occasion, the Company wanted to be different from the other participants in the normal land and sea events. Instead, GP hosted the 'Hot Air Balloon' ride from 14 th 17 th August, which impacted the public to a large extent. The event held at Dataran Bandaraya, has indeed generated tremendous goodwill and publicity as evident by the large crowd gathered as early as 8.00 a.m. awaiting for their chance to get a ride.

As the public were given free rides, the flight ceiling is limited at 15 feet (including height of balloon) above ground level, resulting in about 3 minutes cycle time, including passenger swap. Typically 3 passengers are taken per ride, so that around 50 passengers/hour gets to fly.

On average there were more than 300 passengers/per day from the 1 st day of operation. A total of 1550 participants took part in the 4-day event which concluded on 17 th August 2005 after the launching of Merdeka Day celebration by Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi at Danga Bay.
